Bluetit Diary    Apr 2003 (31)

Saturday 26th April, 2003 (part 2)

At this stage, we can't be certain that Fluffy has two eggs, but Fantail definitely has three!

Fantail leaves the eggs uncovered for a change.  Then Fred comes to admire them.

"All my own work" says Fred.  "Well, I suppose he had some part to play" says Fantail dismissively.

Who's a clever girl then?

"All mine" says Fantail.

Finally, we saw a collared dove behaving oddly during a shower yesterday.  It was perched on top of one of our bird feeders lifting first one wing and then the other high in the air so that the rain would fall on the feathers under its wing.

This shows the collared dove lifting its right wing so far over its back that it looks as though the wing is growing there.

It also lifted its left wing, but by the time I had fetched the camera it had moved onto exercising the right wing.  We had not seen this behaviour before, but when Elizabeth posted a message on the BBC's Nature message board, she was assured that this action is quite usual for doves and pigeons.

While we are showing some normal digital photos as opposed to video pictures, here is one of Fluffy in all her glory.  The bowl is the one we used to use to feed her and other birds with mealworms.  (The lines visible on the larger version are due to the fact that it was taken through our dining room window!)
