Bluetit Diary    May 2003 (74)

Thursday 29th May (part 4)

At six o'clock we finally gave up hope of Fluffy's chicks fledging today and switched to Fantail's brood in Box1.  Here the chicks have a far wider range of development than Fluffy's chicks as the last two hatched two days later than the first four.  We feared that they would not be able to compete successfully for the food brought into the nest, but they seemed to have coped with that situation pretty well so far.

On the left, you can see that the younger chicks still look very pink.  On the right, all six chicks are begging for food from Dad.

Fantail brings in a large green caterpillar.  On the right, Fred and Fantail with their chicks.

The last picture of the day.  It's time to go to sleep!
