Friday 30th May, 2003

We have often wondered whether a single parent could bring up a clutch successfully.  Now we know that the answer is a resounding yes - particularly if it is supported by a ready supply of mealworms!  Flash disappeared shortly after half past eleven on Tuesday morning.  We now know that the last three chicks fledge successfully on Saturday morning.  But we are getting ahead of ourselves as usual!

Friday started with three subdued little chicks huddling together for comfort.  Quite often one chick gets buried and more than once we have thought that another chick must have fledged, only to find it reappearing from beneath its sibling a few moments later.  At first we thought that this was a fight for supremacy, but after watching them for a while it is clear that if they are fighting at all, it is to be at the bottom of the heap!

Quite often Fluffy feeds them from the entrance hole - but then hops down to wait to see if there is an end product to remove.  As this behaviour is new, we think it might help to focus the chicks' attention on the way out.

Fluffy frequently seems to tease the chicks by removing a mealworm and offering it elsewhere if it not immediately firmly grabbed.  Could this be a lesson in securing food quickly when they are left to feed themselves?

A practice flap - about 1½ secs long.
