The woodpecker saga

These are the pictures taken on the morning of Saturday 31st May, of the departure of the first of the three chicks.

7:11:34  The woodpecker has not yet arrived.  All chicks are active and well.

7:11:35  The woodpecker arrives, blocking the hole and shutting out the sunshine.

7:11:36  Has the woodpecker leaned forward and grabbed a chick by the tail or a leg?

The woodpecker is still blocking the light from coming through the hole.

7:11:37  Here the woodpecker must have drawn back, freeing the hole as the sunlight is flooding the nest box.

Has it still got hold of the chick?  Why isn't the chick struggling?

7:11:42  The woodpecker must have dropped the chick and moved forward again as the sunlight is fully blocked.

7:11:44 (1) We think the yellow area could be the sunlight glancing off the woodpeckers back as it leans forward to grab the chick again

7:11:44 (2)  This looks like a chick being dragged up to the hole.

You can see the body and one leg waving in the air.

7:11:45  There are three chicks here, but is one dead?

7:11:49 (1)  This looks like a chick being dragged through the nest box hole

7:11:49 (2)  What on earth is happening here?

7:11:50  Is that a twisted chick's body on the right, or is it the chick's wing?

7:11:52   The chick has gone - but the woodpecker hasn't gone yet!

The woodpecker finally departs - with the chick's body?
