Bluetit Diary    Apr 2004 (31)

Monday 19th April, 2004 (part2)

Something else happened for the first time today.  We saw Barney feeding Fluffy.

This image was the start of the most extended 'kissing' session that we have seen between bluetits.  At about 12.22 Barney came into the nest when Fluffy was already in it - a most unusual thing for him to do.

During the next 30 seconds they touched beaks 22 times!  Whether Barney originally had some food to give to Fluffy we couldn't see, but certainly he did not have 22 items of food!

Here you can see that Fluffy has her beak open ready to receive Barney's food item - she is clearly expecting to be fed!

Or is all this another pair bonding ritual that we have not seen before?

Another beak touching.

This was the last time.  Directly after, Barney turned and left the nest.  The time is now 12.23.

Fluffy has started coming into the nest box for fairly long periods and settling down on the eggs.  For example, she was there for 40 minutes from 3.20pm today.  She also came into the nest for the night at about 6.30pm, rather earlier than usual.

Perhaps she will start to incubate properly soon.  Has she laid her last egg?
