Wednesday  4th February, 2004

Today our new camera arrived.  I am intending to install it on the roof of our garage pointing towards Fluffy's nest box so that we can watch the comings and goings outside as well as inside.  Because the camera is external, it has to be installed in a weatherproof housing and this hasn't arrived yet.  Anyway, it's cold and wet so I probably wouldn't be doing much even if it were here.

Thursday 5th February

Another drizzly day.  However, the camera housing has now arrived together with some cable to connect it to our computer.  The problem is that the camera cannot be fitted directly onto the end wall of the garage, as the eaves of the garage roof get in the way of a direct view of the nest box.  We have to construct some sort of bracket to enable the housing to be mounted with sufficient clearance and height so that the camera can look over the roof towards it, unobstructed.

Saturday 7th February

A fine and sunny day!  Just the day for mounting the camera.  I have put a new mains supply in the garage high up on the wall on the inside so that I can plug in the 12v power supply and also the mains supply for the housing heater.  A couple of holes through the wall enable the cables to reach the camera housing.

Sunday 8th February

Well, it's all finished - at least for now.  Fluffy and Barney have not been in the box for the last three days.  (We have decided that Fluffy's partner is called Barney - solid and dependable - Fluffy needs a dependable partner this year!).  It's not surprising with all the noise I've been making.  We're going to leave them for a few days to get used to their external spy.

Later, we plan to lift the camera a little so as to capture more of the action at the top of the box.  There have already been a couple of occasions when we have wondered what was happening just above the camera's view.

You may have noticed that the colours shown inside Box2 are rather better than those of Box1.  This is because I has added three white LEDs in parallel with the existing light.  I fiddled with the balance of the two lights before finally settling on the configuration now installed and we have been very pleased with the result.  I am now waiting some more diodes so I can do the same for Box1.
