Bluetit Diary    Apr 2005 (30)

Sunday 17th April, 2005

We were out birding today, so we missed a rather strange sequence until we came back.

It's 2.19pm and something odd is going on with Box1.

Well, if it wasn't obvious before, it's clear that a bluetit is having  another look at Box1.  It's probably a male reconnoitering - looking for a potential nest site perhaps - but isn't it awfully late?

Perhaps he's looking for a bachelor pad?

Perhaps it's Carlos again, wondering what happened to his old place?

When going through the pictures, by the time he had got this far I was convinced he would go the whole way!

Only a second later, he moved back again - and then disappeared from the view of the inside camera!  (The outside camera was unfortunately not in use at the time!!)

Nine seconds later he's back again!

It's only a second later -  he MUST be going in this time!

But no - at the last second his heart failed him and although he messed about at the entrance for another couple of minutes but he never went in!

Finally, to judge by the absence of any shadows, let alone beaks, he left.

It was nine minutes later that Babe came rushing back - where had she and Fernando been all this time!

For some time she appears to be taking up a defensive posture, but after about a minute she seems to relax and start doing girlie things to the nest cup (tucking in the sheets, straightening the bed cover, you know what I mean!)
