Bluetit Diary    Jan 2006 (15)

Tuesday 31st January (part2)

It is now half an hour later and a bird is exploring the nest box again.  But will it go in?

Not this time!  The camera catches the action just as the bluetit lets go of the hole to fly off.

It wasn't away long though, and less than 20 seconds later it was back.

I'm guessing that this is the male and that he is looking to see if his partner is nearby so that he can encourage her by going into the nest box first.  That is also consistent with the fact that this bird looks as though he has a wider white head band than the bird we saw earlier.

What's this?  Is he going in this time?

Judging by the inside camera, he had a last minute change of heart as no bird was recorded inside the box at this time!

Surely, this time he must go in!

Yes - he finally went inside!

He didn't stay long though and a few seconds later he was on his way.  Perhaps he hadn't had the right signals from his partner after all.
