Twenty seconds later he is back inside the box again.
This time his persistence is rewarded. He is crouching down because has can hear, and possibly see, that another bird is going to join him inside the box.
Note the fairly wide head band.
The exchange of occupancy is very fast. This picture and the following one were both taken within two seconds of the one above showing the male crouching at the edge of the box. You can also see from the blur that the male, who is the bird at the top of this picture, is already on his way out!
"Where's he gone to?" the female seems to be saying!
We missed a picture of the male leaving - I had forgotten to reset the masks when I moved the camera so that I was lucky to get any outside pictures at all!
This is a picture of the female leaving a short while later.
This is the best picture the system has taken so far this year and was taken shortly after the sequence above. See how fine the wing feathers are - you can actually see through them when they are fully stretched out at takeoff!
