Bluetit Diary    Apr 2007 (16)

Monday 16th April (part2)

Today, the system seems to have recorded an unusually large number of images of birds in flight.  I thought you might like to see a few.

This is Morgan leaving the nest after giving the mealworm to Fay that we showed on the previous page.

And this is Fay herself leaving the nest box a few minutes later.

Fay clearly isn't yet incubating - after all she only has four eggs (we think - we haven't seen them yet!) - but she keeps on going back to the nest box to see that all is well.

Having now watched bluetits and great tits for three years, we find bluetits much more interesting.  They are restless birds, always up to something.  By comparison, great tits are slower and duller.

Perhaps next year we will make the entrance hole smaller again!

A shot of Greta leaving the nest box.

Greta approaching the nest box towards the end of the day.

Greta leaving the box again some time later.

She is a bit too close to the camera so unfortunately the picture is a bit out of focus!

Finally, in an unguarded moment, Fay left her eggs exposed.  She does indeed have four.  So far, once they have started laying, all our birds have laid one egg each day.

Finally, a picture of Fay last thing before the lights go off.  She has settled down to roost overnight while sitting on her eggs.

It is interesting that the hen birds regularly do this but it does not seem to start the eggs' development.  All the eggs seem to hatch within a 24 hour period anyway - except perhaps for one which is sometimes laid after incubation has started.
