Bluetit Diary    Apr 2007 (21)

Saturday 21st April, 2007

Two more eggs today - one each from Fay and Abby.

Nine eggs for Fay so far.  When will she stop?  The most eggs ever laid by one female in one or our nests is 10 which was the number laid by Kate in Box2 last year.  (I had to word that carefully as in 2002, after one female had laid 8 eggs a fight took place and another female took over the nest box, laying 3 eggs of her own a couple of weeks later.  6 eggs hatched and 5 chicks fledged!)

This looks like Abby has laid 9 too - which is impossible!  (As bluetits can only lay one egg each day!)

Perhaps one is a feather.

It looks like only 8 eggs here.

Angus giving Abby some breakfast.  (It is just before 8am in the morning!)

More food for Abby.

The same shot from the side.

This is the first year we have had the side mounted camera and with hindsight, it is clear that I should have mounted it higher up in the nest box.

Abby has brought in more nesting material than usual and as a result, little can be seen of her when she is snuggled down in the nest cup.

Next year, if I still have the same setup, I shall make sure that the side mounted camera views the scene from a better angle!

Greta shows us all how she just gets on with incubating.  How much longer before her eggs hatch?  About 6 days I reckon!
