Bluetit Diary    Apr 2007 (22)

Sunday 22nd April, 2007

Both Fay and Abby have laid another egg today

This is today's shot of Fay's eggs - now 10 in number.  Doesn't she keep them looking beautifully neat and clean?

Abby is still laying too.  She now has 9 eggs

Are these two bluetits in some sort of pact?  Neither of them has missed a morning since they started!

Whether she has gone to the entrance of the nest box because Gustaf has called her, or because she wants to be fed, I don't know but Greta seems to be saying something here.

Here comes Gustaf with some food ...

... which he graciously consents to feed to Greta.

As soon as Greta has the food in her beak ...

... she vanishes. (No she isn't inside the box!)

Angus gives Abby some breakfast (it is still only half past eight.) ...

... and then turns to go - giving us an excellent opportunity to compare the two birds head feathers.

You can see that Abby's head feathers are smoothly laid back on her head whereas Angus's head feathers are rougher and his head band is wider.  These characteristics become more apparent as the breeding season progresses  to the point where many male bluetits will lose their head feathers altogether.

Gustaf feeding Greta at the hole again.  I cannot remember this method of feeding the female happening before.

More food for Abby.  Angus seems a more diligent partner than Morgan or Gustaf!
