Bluetit Diary    Apr 2007 (23)

Monday 23rd April, 2007

At last both Fay and Abby seem to have stopped laying eggs.  Neither produced another this morning.  We had them both as starting to incubate their eggs on Saturday so it is not a surprise that there is no egg today from either of them.

So Fay still has the ten eggs she had yesterday.  I nearly said 'only 10 eggs'!  However, only Kate last year in this same box has ever laid as many as 10 eggs in a clutch in any of our boxes.  I wonder if Fay is the bird we called Kate last year?

This is certainly not impossible.  In 2003 we had a bird we called Fluffy because she had a very pronounced set of curly feathers on her front.  She was so easily identifiable that we had no doubt it was the same bird that occupied the box again in 2004.

Wouldn't it be nice if our birds could be ringed, so that we could identify them for sure from one year to the next?!

Abby has also decided to call it a day.  Her clutch of 9 eggs is still pretty large by our standards.

Greta continues to do her bit.  Hard work this incubating, isn't it!

I see that Fay has adopted the head tucked in style too.

We have been a bit worried about the place that Abby has decided to lay her eggs.  I have put  a picture of the (more or less) empty nest box alongside so that you can see the step that there is at the bottom of the ramp which leads up to the side mounted camera.

Our fear is that some of the eggs might rest on the step, which is about 20mm high, while the others sink to the bottom of the nest box beside it.  This might mean that some eggs get warmer than others which would imply a significant difference in the date that they hatch.  We shall see.  Certainly, there seems to be no sign of this happening at present.
