Bluetit Diary    Apr 2007 (9)

Wednesday 11th April, 2007

Early this morning, our first egg of the season was laid!

This was the picture of Greta's nest that greeted us when we switched on this morning.  She finished her nest so long ago that we were beginning to wonder if she knew what it was for, but today all these worries have been dispelled.

Is this a picture of Greta shouting for joy, or is something else happening outside?

Ah, it's Gustaf coming to celebrate no doubt!

But what's he doing?  Is he going inside too?

No!  He has brought Greta a present as a reward.

She rather looks as though she doesn't know what to do with it!

But why is Gustaf still hanging around? Doesn't he know he is supposed to go off and get some more?

Now it looks as though Great is looking to see whether a chick has hatched out so that she can feed it!  Sensible girl, if a bit premature.  There's a lot more work to do yet, Greta!

So that's why Gustaf didn't disappear.  He still has some food to give her.

Or perhaps he hasn't.  It doesn't look as though Greta has received any more.

Gustaf leans in again ...

... and Greta leans forward for another try.

Gustaf has done his bit now ...

... and departs.

Again, Greta checks to make sure she does not have a chick to feed!

Realising the eggs don't have beaks to push food at, she gets ready to go.

A couple of minutes later she's off.
