Bluetit Diary    Apr 2007 (8)

Monday 9th April, 2007

We've often wondered what would happen if one of the bluetits was inside Greta's box when she came home!  Today we find out one  possible outcome!

It all starts unremarkably.  Mr Bluetit comes yet again for another look at Greta's nest box.  Is she really going to use it?

Having seen that it is empty, he soon jumps down onto the hole

Eventually, after a lot of hesitation and many false starts, he decides to go into the box.

Mr Bluetit inside the box!

Does he get cold feet?  After only about 10 seconds he starts to go out again - only to find Mrs Bluetit outside and ready to follow him inside.

So, as is the way with all true gentlemen, he defers to her and retreats back into the box.

You can see the way his body feathers are all ruffed up by trying to go in backwards!

Mr Bluetit back inside the box.

But what's happening now?  Where is she?  Why doesn't Mrs Bluetit come in?

This is why she doesn't!  Greta (or is it Gustaf?) is here to reclaim the box as hers!

Greta's first reaction is to recoil in horror.  A bluetit inside her box!

Mr Bluetit is in deep trouble!

There is only one thing to do - make a run for it!

He bursts past Greta who is still on the hole, and knocks her out of the way.

He's gone - and so has Greta!

Fifteen seconds later, Greta is back to inspect the nest box.

Has Mr Bluetit done any damage?

It's all OK - everything is still as she left it.

At least Greta hasn't started laying her eggs yet - assuming she will eventually!
