Bluetit Diary    Feb 2007 (11)

Tuesday 27th February, 2007

The situation at Box1 is still uncertain.  While there is a female great tit visiting quite frequently as well as roosting over night, the bluetit still keeps an eye on this possible nesting site.  Now it appears as though the bluetit is introducing his partner to the box!

The male bluetit is visiting Box1 again.  Why do I think it is the male?  Read on and you will find out!

After a little while, he jumps down onto the nest box hole ...

... and this time there is no messing about - he goes in straight away.

Because I can only show you individual images, it is easy to lose the sense of how much time has passed between shots.  If you cannot see the time stamp on the picture itself, because I have edited it out, you can always find out when it was taken by right clicking on the picture and then clicking Properties.  The window that then opens gives the file name which is in numeric format yyyymmddhhmmssq where yyyy is the year, mm the month, and dd the day of the month.  Then hh gives the hour, mm the minute and finally ss the second in which the photograph was taken.  The final digit q is a sequence digit so that if three photos were taken within the same second, they would have q as 1,2 and 3 respectively!

Inside the box he has a good look around, ...

... and then has a look at the view from the nest box hole.

Here he is again, back on the floor of the box.

But who is this?  Here is a second bluetit!

This one too jumps down to the nest box hole.

Suddenly, the bird inside crouches down as if he were expecting his partner to come in.

And this is why I think the first bird was male and the second female.  The normal pattern when a bluetit pair are searching for a nest site is for the male to do the initial searching and for him then to get the female to come and have a look at what he has found.  He would normally then leave her inside the site to make up her own mind as to whether it is the one to go for.
