Bluetit Diary    Jan 2007 (16)

Wednesday 24th January, 2007

For the first time for some years, we have had some snow overnight.  When I got up this morning I found the garden covered in about an inch of crisp white snow!  For most of our birds, this must have been the first time they had come across the stuff and so today I am going to show you how some of them coped with it.

We don't see many chaffinches on our Fat Feeder, but this one must have been wondering what this white stuff covering all his food was!  He is a very rare visitor to the Fat Feeder but you can see why he might have tried it again today.

As normal, he was either too big, or too cowardly to get into the feeder.

As well as all the ground, the bird table was also covered by snow.  I don't know quite what the robin has to sing about, he couldn't get at his food either!

The blackbird also looks a little confused.

Another strange happening.  This is the only time a great tit has looked into the new bird box.

Soon after the regular bluetit came in.  I love the way it looks towards the camera.  You can almost see its puzzlement about what lies behind the glass.

It's a pity this starling's left wing doesn't look as good as its right, but even so, I think this is a lovely picture.

Another chaffinch looking for food in the snow.  This time it's a female.

The start of an interesting robin sequence.  You can see that Elizabeth has cleared the snow off the table and left some food there.

A robin comes to the table to feed.

A second robin appears and the first warns it off.

The newcomer grabs some food anyway ...

... before flying off.

But what's happening here.  This picture was taken within the same second as the one above and seems to show a third robin appearing at the bottom left of the picture.  This causes the original robin to scarper, so perhaps it is lower in the pecking order than the newcomer.
