Bluetit Diary    Jan 2007 (4)

Thursday 4th January, 2007

I'm still not sure of the status of the various great tits we see around Box1.  Here one (the male?) is having a look inside the box while hanging from the roof.

This picture, taken at the same time, shows the reaction of the inside bird (the female?).  This looks like a reasonably friendly reaction - particularly when you see how she behaves when she wants to be hostile.

It's now 20 minutes later and the bluetit comes to have a look.

The great tit's reaction is clearly an aggressive one which reinforces the view that the first two pictures above were of a pair.

Isn't it a lovely day!  She seems to be viewing the world from the nest box hole.

Is she looking for her partner hoping he will start feeding her?

Leaving the nest box.  The wonders of modern camera technology!

Our poor great tit gets little peace.  She is inside (she seems to spend half the day there at the moment) when a coal tit arrives to look around.

The coal tit is clearly not welcomed!  This image was taken at the same time as the one above.

Forty minutes later and the bluetit is back.  You have to work hard at keeping a good potential nesting site!

"Go away!"

Ten minutes later something else causes a significant reaction.

But it's only your partner - or is it a third great tit trying to muscle in?
