Bluetit Diary    Jan 2007 (9)

Friday 12th January, 2007

Things are coming on slowly.  Today we have had a first for the season - a picture of two bluetits in the same nest box at the same time - just!

It all started at about a quarter to eleven when we noticed that Box2 had a visitor inside.

At the same time there was another bluetit perched on the box outside.

Then it hopped down onto the nestbox hole.

At this point the bird inside the nestbox crouched down as they do when expecting another bird to come into the box.

And in it went!

For the briefest of intervals, there were two birds in the same box!

However, immediately the second bird had arrived, the first took off.  We believe that the first bird was probably a male and second a female who he had managed to entice into the box.

The newly arrived bluetit always seems to look slightly bewildered when this happens.

"Was it something I said?" she seems to say!

She doesn't stay long and 20 seconds later leaves the box.

Away she goes!
