Bluetit Diary    Mar 2007 (1)

Thursday 1st March, 2007

With luck, this will be the month when it all starts to happen!

The great tit in Box1 is getting ideas again.  Here she comes in with some moss ...

... which she attempts to spread around the box with a flick of her head.  In practice, she forgets to let go of the moss at the crucial moment so it just dropped to the floor in one lump ...

... as can be seen here!

What's she doing now!  She has picked it up again ...

... and is now taking it back out again!

She doesn't go far though, and with the moss still clamped firmly in her beak, she is back in the nest just 7 seconds later.

So what was the point of all that then?

At this stage of the year, the birds we have been watching over the last six years seem to do crazy things with nesting material and sometimes we despair of them ever completing a nest.  However, their activity does seem to help to establish their claim to the site and they finish off the nest very quickly when the time is right!
