Bluetit Diary    May 2007 (3)

Thursday 3rd May, 2007

We had left the system on last night in the hope of collecting some hoggie pictures.  This meant that we started recording images in the bluetits' nest boxes when the power went on at about 6:40am.

At the start of the day, there still seem to be at least 5 eggs unhatched.

Abby's eggs have not started hatching yet.  We expect them to start today or tomorrow.

Morgan brings Fay a LGC (little green caterpillar) for the chicks ...

... which Fay feeds to them straight away.

Greta's chicks are doing well.  Here comes a parent (I still can't easily tell the difference between Greta and Gustaf) with some food for them.

Back in Fay's nest box, another chick is hatching!

You can see the other half of the eggshell here.  (Fay has just flown off with the first half.)

It is now midday and there are still three unhatched eggs left.  I wonder whether some of these will never hatch.

A visit from Morgan, bringing food for the brood.

Abby's eggs are still intact.

Judging from the glimpses of white between the writhing pink blobs, Fay still has at least a couple of eggs unhatched.

Here she is giving the chicks that have hatched out what must be the final feed of the day.
