Bluetit Diary    May 2007 (4)

Friday 4th May, 2007

We left the computer on again last night.  As before, this was in order to catch sight of visiting hedgehogs - nothing to do with the bluetits.  However, this is what the system picked up when it turned the power on to the cameras automatically at about twenty minutes to seven.

What on earth is happening here?  It looks as though Fay is having to remove a dead chick from the nest box.

Yes - Here she is seen from the outside.  She still has the dead chick in her beak.

A few minutes later she does the same with a second dead chick.  Why on earth are they dying?

The remaining chicks look a healthy pink and are wriggling as usual.  And it looks as though there are still three unhatched eggs.

Spot on seven o'clock, another egg hatches.

Shortly after, Morgan comes in with a LGC (little green caterpillar) - the staple diet of young bluetit chicks.

Oh no!  Not another dead chick!  I fear so.
