Bluetit Diary    May 2007 (7)

Sunday 6th May, 2007

At least Greta's chicks still appear to be doing well.  That is the only thing keeping us sane in this disastrous nesting season.  Today we have another early start - and sometime wish we hadn't!

A glorious picture of Greta's six chicks all doing what healthy chicks always do - shouting for food!

It's a pity that with all the bad news in the bluetit nest boxes, we tend to overlook the steady progress made by Greta's chicks.

At the start of the day, Abby's chicks appear to be OK.  They are wriggling pleasingly often.

It's 6.50am and Angus brings in some food for the chicks.

Nine minutes later when he next comes, he finds Abby missing so he tries to feed the chicks himself.

A quarter of an hour later, Angus again finds Abby away from the nest box.  I don't know what item of food he has brought, but is seems suitably small for a healthy chick.

It is now early afternoon.  Angus again finds Abby away from the nest box when he brings food.

She is back soon enough.  This picture was taken 8 minutes later and shows that she has brought a LGC for the chicks.

We'd had high hopes that this brood of chicks would be all right until we saw this picture.  Abby is removing the dead body of a chick.

What could possibly cause chicks to die in both our bluetit nest boxes?

Let's hope this one is an isolated incident.

It is now 7pm but Angus is still hard at work collecting food for his chicks.

Here he passes the food to Abby to feed to the chicks.

It's now half past seven and he is still at it.  However, half an hour has passed since his last visit.  Are the chicks getting enough food?

It is now nearly 20 to eight and Abby lets us see the chicks for the last time today.

They all appear OK - they are the right colour and they are wriggling about a fair bit.  Lets hope tomorrow sees no more dead chicks.
