Sunday 6th April, 2008

The day the snow fell!

When I first got up, the snow had already covered the ground and was still falling steadily.

The food on the bird table, or what was left of it from yesterday, was completely covered by the snow.

Elizabeth soon cleared it and refilled the food bowls - much to the delight of our robin ...

... and nuthatch!

Sally and Joe seem quite unimpressed by all this white stuff - which as they have probably never seen snow before, is quite surprising.  They seem to be going about their lives as usual - this is part of a swap sequence.

A rather amusing shot of Sally leaving the nest box!

Meanwhile in Box1, Gelda is continuing with her nest building.  The stuff she is bringing in still seems to be as dry as ever - despite the snow.  I wonder where she is getting it from?

Over in Box3, Abby has still not started nest building.  Here she is coming in empty beaked to join Angus.

Angus crouches down as normal as Abby enters the box.

Abby appears to pause in the entrance and Angus, who has already started to leave, flies up to the hole while Abby is still filling it!

The resulting clash leads to both birds getting themselves in a tangle ...

... which ends up with both of them still in the box.

As it is the one clinging to the hole in the picture above who disappears, we presume that this must be Angus - leaving Abby to wonder quite what happened!
