Friday 4th April, 2008

Gelda has been busy with her nest today.

This was the state of the nest at the start of the day.  You can clearly see the floor through the thin layer of moss.

Gelda seems to have found a different nest material.  So far it has mainly been moss that she has brought into the nest box.  This looks more like fine dry grass.  I wonder where she is getting it from!

Seven minutes later she is back with another beakful.

After another 5 minutes she is back with more.

Having brought the grass in, she doesn't seem to take any care about where it goes.  She just chucks it down anywhere and then wriggles around where she wants to make the nest cup.

Back with more dry grass.

A couple of hours later, the nest box looks fuller.  As well as the grass, she has clearly been bringing in more moss too.

She seems to be having a struggle with this beakful!

It is now much later - just after 6pm - and we are wondering who this is.  We hope it's Gelda's partner, Phil, but up to now we haven't seen much of him.

Half a minute later he flies down to the nest box hole.  The nest is empty and we presume Phil must be looking to see whether Gelda has gone to roost yet.

As you can see, she hasn't!  However, you can also see that she now has much more nesting material than was there at the start of the day.

Gelda finally went into the box to roost shortly after 7.30pm.

As is normal, she spent several minutes fussing around and preening before settling down for the night ...

... but by twenty to eight she was fast asleep!
