Friday 18th April, 2008

So Sally is the first of our birds to lay an egg!

We had left the computer on all night last night in the hope that we would see some hoggie pictures - and also because Sally was roosting in her box for the first time.  You never know, we said!

And Sally came up trumps!  As I replayed the mornings pictures when I got up around eight o'clock, there at half past seven was  the picture we had been waiting for - our first egg of 2008!

It was just as well that the computer was on then.  Sally covered the egg up shortly after this picture was taken and it has been out of sight most of the day.

So what about the hoped for hoggie pictures?  Well hoggie came once more after we had gone to bed, making three visits that evening.  We knew it was the same one because we followed Pat Morris's suggestion and daubed some white paint on his rear quarter - you can see the resulting smudge here.

We were relieved that he came back twice more after suffering the indignity of the painting.  However, he didn't seem fussed by the process - he didn't even curl up into a ball - he just kept still while I applied the paint.

Now let's see what happens tomorrow!  Will we get a second egg from Sally?  Will Gelda start laying?  Or will Abby beat her to it?
