Bluetit Diary    Apr 2008 (7)

Tuesday 15th April, 2008

Abby had a scare this morning.

At about twenty past eleven, Box3 was empty when a great tit came to pay a visit.

He spends some time checking the box out.  You can see from the time stamp that 20 seconds has passed since he arrived at the nest box hole.

Finally, he decodes it's safe to enter and starts to go inside.

You can see that he was almost fully committed here!

Suddenly, he withdraws and looks behind him.  We can only presume that he must have heard something that made him change his mind.

A second later and he has clearly seen something too.  This is the last the camera saw of him.  He must have left in a hurry!

This shot is the only shot we have of Abby (or Angus) going into the nest box.  The outside camera missed her and the side mounted camera inside only picked her up once she was inside.

She is clearly on guard - she watches the entrance hole intently.

She watches for the great tit for quite a while.

Eventually, after a couple of minutes, she feels safe enough to have a look outside and soon after this, she leaves.

Just so that you don't forget out great tits, here is another picture of Gelda roosting.  Now that she has finished her nest, we don't see so much of her.  However, she comes to the box at about 7.30pm each evening and without waiting for the light to be switched off, she curls up and goes to sleep!

We hope that one of these mornings, we will find she has laid an egg!
