Bluetit Diary    Feb 2008 (4)

Wednesday 13th February, 2008

I'm relieved to see that moving Box3 and installing an outside camera on it has not put off our visiting blue and great tits.

First, you had to see this image caught by the camera outside Box1.  The bluetit flew out of the box straight towards the camera - pity it's a bit out of focus though!

An almost perfect picture!  I must make a final adjustment to its position so that the nest box hole is nearer the centre of the picture.  What a pity that the top of the right wing has been missed!  The fineness and delicacy of the bluetit's wings has to be seen to be truly appreciated.

The same bird having landed.

A great tit is also looking at Box3.  Here he comes into land with feet outstretched (undercarriage down as Elizabeth says!)

The great tit has landed!

He has a good look around ...

... and then looks inside the box.  The hole here is 32mm - plenty big enough for a great tit.

The view from inside the box.

Does he go in the box?  Not this time.

So far, only bluetits have been inside this box.

I wonder whether this is the same great tit that spends so much time trying to get into Box1?  (He's been trying again today!)

A final picture of Box1.  This time it's a nuthatch that's having a look around.  There's no chance he could get inside if the great tit can't!
