Bluetit Diary    May 2008 (3)

Monday 5th May, 2008

The pair of great tits that have recently started taking an interest in Box3, have been very busy there today!

Things started getting busy in the afternoon.

We're not sure whether this is the male or the female.

The other of the pair arrives too ...

... and goes inside.

You can see there are still two birds in the box.  There is a silhouette of the head of the second bird in the bottom right of the picture.

One leaves after a couple of minutes ...

... but returns a couple of minutes later, the other bird still being inside.

This looks like the male is feeding the female.

The female nestles down in what is becoming the nest cup.

An hour or so later, an interesting thing happened here.  First one bird landed on the nest box hole.

Before it had had a chance to go inside, the second bird arrived!

There was nearly a collision here and the second bird had to slam on the brakes and take evasive action.  You can see it has one leg on the nest box while the other just dangles beneath it.

Phew.  That was a close one!

When they had got over that, the second bird went into the box.  Judging from the first birds behaviour, she is the female and the follower is the male.

The pair in the box - is he feeding her again?  It looks like it to me!  This male is more visible than any bluetit or great tit I have seen before.

A little while later, the female come in with some moss.

Another load!

She is almost buried by the stuff now.

All this bodes well for the future.  If it all happened two or three weeks ago, we would be expecting the female to start laying eggs pretty soon.  But isn't it a bit late now?

Keep you fingers crossed for us!
