Bluetit Diary    May 2008 (4)

Wednesday 7th May, 2008

No sign yet of Sally's eggs hatching.  However, as incubation started on 27th April, we do not expect hatching to start before Friday 9th May - the 12th day after this.

Sally is still trying to be the dutiful hen - a task that I don't think comes easily to her.  She has always appeared to be a bit of a fidget and frequently takes short breaks from incubation duty.

Every now and then, Joe brings her something to eat but at this stage this is only happening a few times a day.

Let's hope he will be a better partner when he has chicks to feed!

Another feed for Sally.

The great tit pair interested in Box3 is still around.

We have decided to call these great tits Ken and Freda.

Freda is still bringing nesting material into the box - even though it is pretty full already.  It is probably part of the need to make it her nest and not somebody else's leftover.

This is first as far as we are aware.  Freda is roosting in the box for the first time.

Unfortunately, she has made the nest cup just out of the reach of the IR lights - most inconsiderate of her.  Still, at least you can see that she is there!

I can sense some design changes must be made before next year!

Watching the playback of the pictures taken during the night, one get's the feeling that she hardly slept a wink - the night was one long wriggle!

She left the box at first light - which is currently about a quarter past five.  Let's hope she starts laying some eggs soon!
