Bluetit Diary    May 2008 (9)

Friday 16th May, 2008

It's difficult to realise that Freda has only been incubating for three days!

Doesn't 12 days seem a long time when you are watching a bird incubating?

Don't despair, Freda, there's only 9 days to go!

Who's this hanging about Box3?  Perhaps it's Abby or Angus.

I wonder why they decided to give up on nesting in this Box.  Did they find somewhere else to use or have they missed out on having a nest this year?

Freda has managed to get herself caught up with something that looks like a long thin wood shaving.

It's not clear whether she has it in her beak, or whether it is just caught up around her legs.

Whatever it is, it is pretty long!

She's got herself really tangled up with it.  I hope it doesn't come to be a serious problem.

You can't see whether it is still attached to Freda, but the other end is still hanging out of the entrance hole!

Ken doesn't seem to mind!  Here he comes with a green caterpillar for Freda ...

... which he delivers to Freda.

The shaving is still hanging out of Box3.

Half an hour later, Freda seems to have got it wrapped around her again.

She can't seem to get rid of it!

Good old Ken - he just ignores it and carries on bringing Freda more food.

Has she freed herself now?

Not really!

Sally and Joe are starting to have their work cut out keeping pace with their brood's increasing appetite.  However, they seem to be doing a good job with both parents frequently bringing food.

There still appears to be 10 chicks, although it is difficult to find an image with 10 distinct beaks showing at the same time.
