Bluetit Diary    Apr 2009 (16)

Monday 27th April (part2)

We are concerned about what is happening in Fay's box.  We have not been able to see her eggs for four or five days.  Also we can never be sure if the birds we see around outside are Bill or not.

This bird does not seem to have any of the facial markings we observed before.  Is this Fay's partner or is it the other bluetit?

Today Fay behaves even more oddly than usual.  She has been in and out of the nest box several times this morning so far, but it is now just before 9 o'clock and this is her last visit until dusk!

It is now just before 7pm and we have been really worried as to whether something had happened to Fay.

Then suddenly, she re-appeared!

She did all the things we have learned to expect a broody female to do, and appeared to be settling down for the night, when suddenly ...

... she upped and left the box!

She went so quickly that she forgot to cover her eggs - and, oh dear, there seem to be only three of them!  We had hoped for something nearer six!

Was that Bill's fault?  Fay has always seemed very broody in her behaviour.

Or are there other eggs still hidden from us?

The cameras turn off automatically at 7.30pm, shortly after the above picture was taken.

At 9pm we briefly switched the camera on again - and to our great relief found Fay asleep in the box as usual.

Let's hope for a more relaxing day tomorrow!
