Bluetit Diary    Apr 2009 (18)

Thursday 30th April, 2009

Bertie has brought some food for Bella.  A little green caterpillar by the look of it - the staple diet of bluetits at this time of year.

All Bella's eggs are still intact.  We don't expect them to start hatching before this coming weekend.

What's this great tit up to, poking its beak into Fay's nest box?

And where is Fay?

Not in the nest box anyway!  Probably gadding around somewhere enjoying her last few days of freedom!

She and Bill should be around to defend their territory and their nest box.

The great tit did not return until 17:37 - but this time it brought its partner to see what it had found.

If that's the male on the nest box hole, it's a pretty ugly brute.  If I were a bluetit, I wouldn't want to have to defend my box against him!

The female still looks interested even though the male is out of the picture.

Will she go into the box?  Or try to - it's a bluetit sized hole and that would be a tight squeeze for a great tit.

No - not at the moment anyway.

Is she having second thoughts.  If this pair are not fixed up yet they must be getting pretty desperate!

She's certainly having another good look.

No.  She must have been able to see the nest inside - which looks fresh this year so she would realise that she would have to fight for the nest box.

Perhaps she's not that desperate yet!

Still, I wish Fay and Bill were around the box more.  It would serve them right if they lost it!
