Bluetit Diary    May 2009 (1)

Friday 1st May, 2009

We kept the computer on again last night so that we could see if hoggie would pay us a visit.  As a result, we had some early pictures of our bluetits as well.

The light came on as Bella was diving down into the bottom of the nest - presumably to turn the eggs and keep the nest clean.

Fay still seems somewhat preoccupied by the bright orange fluff that she brought in earlier - but she doesn't seem to know what to do with it!.

Suddenly we notice that Bella is putting a display on about something.

And this is what it is!  No wonder she is on the defensive.

The squirrel doesn't stay long, but Bella stays on the defensive for some time after it left.

Now what on earth is this?

I have looked at the picture before and after this one and they both look normal;  so do the pictures taken of the inside at this time.  It must be something flying very close to the outside camera.

And finally ...!

Fay is normally very careful to keep her eggs covered.  However, she usually comes into the box for the night fairly early, typically between 5:45 and 6 o'clock.

If, after she has been in for a while, she suddenly decides to take a quick flight outside, she sometimes forgets to cover the eggs again.

It was in these circumstances that she showed us that she has six eggs this evening.  Unless there are more that are still covered, this means that she has been laying roughly one every other day since the first was laid on 22nd April.

Perhaps she will start incubating soon!
