Bluetit Diary    Apr 2009 (7)

Saturday 11th April, 2009

Bella has laid her first egg.

This is the picture we were presented with first thing this morning.  No sign of any egg then.

However, when she came into the box for the first time after we had switched on, we noticed that she seemed very interested in the nest cup.

After she had fussed about a bit, she moved to one side and we could see what looked like an egg!  Or was it a feather?

Most of the time the egg stayed clearly visible.

This time she has brought in another feather ...

... but when she left a short while later, the egg could still be seen.

Another shot of the egg.

More dry grass.  Where on earth does she find it - today of all days.  It has been drizzling on and off all day!

This time she has made a better job of covering the egg.

Just a little gloat about the egg?  And why not!

I don't know what this piece of leaf has done to offend Bella, but out it goes.

Bella has exposed the egg again.  Still, it is pretty safe inside the nest box.

She came and went like this for the rest of the day, and when the system shut down, she was not in the box.

However, we had a sneaky suspicion that she might come back to roost and at about 10 o'clock, we turned on briefly to take a picture.

There was Bella, fast asleep.  She didn't move while the lights were on and we left her to sleep after a couple of seconds.

She won't get much rest later!
