Bluetit Diary    Apr 2009 (9)

So where are we now with our three nest boxes?

This is Fay in Box1.  She has made a little progress recently, but things move very slowly in Box1.

That, and the fact that we rarely see Bill, makes us a little concerned about the chances of a happy brood of chicks here.

To see how far Fay still has to go, just look behind her and you can see the wooden floor of the nest box.

Bella seems to be doing some sort of ritual dance over her four(?) eggs.  She is still bringing in feathers and other nesting material from time to time.

At least this box appears to be going to plan!

And what will be the fate of Box3 this year?  After two years of disasters, we were hoping for something better, but the lack of any birds adopting the nest box as theirs is worrying.

Here a bluetit is coming in to pay a visit.

He lands on the entrance hole, ...

... takes a peek inside ...

... but doesn't go inside.

You can just see a bit of a wing and his tail to the right of the picture.

Back to Box1 where Fay is doing her best to tell me that my worries are unnecessary!

Here is some hay ...

... and half an hour later it's moss ...

... so we think she will get there eventually.

Finally, Bertie is still looking after Bella.

Here he comes with a tit-bit for her.  She has turned to greet him and has adopted a begging posture.

Bertie approaches Bella ...

... and passes her the food.

Bertie looks as though he will be a good dad - keep your fingers crossed for them!
