Bluetit Diary    Feb 2009 (11)

Friday 27th February, 2009

Before we start the main part of today's entry, I couldn't resist showing you this nuthatch.  It has such an elegant outline.

Here it is looking at Box1 again.  The entrance hole is still too small for it to get inside!

Box3 has been busy today.  Here a bluetit comes into land on the roof.

It stays a few seconds here before ...

... going onto the entrance hole ...

... and then entering the box.  It was quite quick though, this is only 11 seconds after it landed on the roof.

It doesn't do much inside - it's just getting the feel of the place perhaps.

Half a minute later it's on its way.

Four hours later it is back again.  This time it flies straight for the entrance hole.

Is this the same bird?  Probably, by the look of it.  If you compare this picture with the one five frames above, I think you will agree.

This time it took 15 seconds before it went into the box.

Again, once inside it just seems to look around.

At the moment, with no nest material in the box, you can only see the birds top half.  I hope I have judged the future depth of the nest material accurately!

Another view from the side mounted camera.

The same view from above.  The colour from this camera doesn't seem as good.  I must remember to look at the capture card settings.

Yes - that's the way out.

The view from above.

Looking out ...

... and leaving.
