Bluetit Diary    Mar 2009 (13)

Friday 20th March, 2009

This is the silly season for nesting bluetits.  Both Box1 and Box2 have been taken over by a pair of bluetits, and in both boxes the female is still only playing at nest building.  Box3 is still more open.  There have been bluetits and great tits regularly visiting it, but no birds have yet claimed ownership of the box.

Here is Bella in Box2 again.  At the start of a new day, the box is empty and she has just brought in a nice piece of hay.

She celebrates with a nesting wriggling session.

Half an hour later she brings in some moss.  But where is the hay she brought in earlier?  Where indeed is the nesting material she has been bringing into the nest box these past few weeks?

While Bella carries on with her nest building play, Bertie celebrates with some wingless flying!

Now it's Fay's turn to get the spotlight.  This is Box1 and Fay, like Bella, is playing with nesting material.

She does even more nesting wriggles than Bella does!

And another ...

... and a third!  With this one, she seems to have hit the side of the nest box!

Back to more serious things - here is Fay with a beak full of moss.

And so it continues.  Let's hope they get down to the real work soon!
