Bluetit Diary    Nov 2008 (1)

Sunday 16th November, 2008

As usual, the diary for the 2009 nesting season starts in November 2008.  This is when the bird boxes are taken down and given a good clean.  This could have been done a month or two earlier but I never seem to get around to it until about now.

Box1 has been given the full treatment.  This has involved removing the old nesting material, and in this case the 5 great tit eggs that were deserted last May, and sterilising the inside as much as possible by using boiling water.

No sooner had I done this than we had our first visitor!  The bluetit didn't go inside, but it gets us off to a good start!

We are going to try for a bluetit brood in this box again this year.  This means making sure that the metal hole plate is bluetit rather than great tit sized.  We will see what happens!

I have also managed to get Box2 back in position today.  This already has a bluetit sized metal plate, so nothing needs changing here.

We've also had a bluetit taking a quick look here.  So quick that we only got one picture as it flew away from the box's entrance hole.

There will be plenty more visits soon I am sure.
