Bluetit Diary    Nov 2008 (5)

A great tit gives us the once over.

Now a nuthatch visits us again.

Is he trying to go inside?  The books say a nuthatch needs an entrance hole of at least 32mm diameter and this one is only 28mm across so the chances of his getting in are pretty small.

Judging from this view, he tried quite hard to get inside the box ... !

... but no go!

The outside cameras pick up some odd shots from time to time.  Here's one of a bluetit doing some wingless flying!

It's just after half past nine and the nuthatch is back.

They are beautiful birds.

Ah!  A bluetit caught in the act of coming into land on Box2.

The jay says he can copy that!

So does the great tit!

None of them matches the bluetit though.

I know the RSPB site says that a great tit can make use of a box with a 28mm hole but we've never seen one do it!

A nuthatch again - this time at Box1.

This picture of a male bluetit shows him with his head feathers raised.  (That's how we know it is male!)

I wonder what made him think he needed to look fierce?

Finally, a fox frequently passes through our garden as part of his night time prowling.  Here he looks as though he is trying to eat the remains of the food scattered on the ground beside the bird bath.

He looks in pretty good nick!
