Bluetit Diary    Jan 2010 (5)

Tuesday 19th January, 2010

No sooner is Box3 up but everyone seems to be interested in it!

This time it's a great tit that has come to investigate.

He doesn't just have a look around outside either.  This is a bold great tit!

He is obviously curious about the side mounted camera section of the box.

But hold on, where is his tail?

He jumps up onto the ledge just beneath the camera mounting where it's too close for the camera to focus properly.

As he leaves, you can see that he is missing all his long tail feathers.  He reminds me of Ferdinand, the male great tit that occupied Box1 in 2005.  He was missing all his tail feathers in a similar fashion.

This is a picture of Ferdinand on the entrance to Box1 that was taken in April 2005.

I wonder whether the lack of a tail is an inherited characteristic or the result of physical damage?  If it is inherited, Ferdinand could just be the latest bird's parent or perhaps more probably, grandparent.

This could be an interesting season!

Bluetits still visit Box2 regularly, though no bird went inside the box today.
