Bluetit Diary    Mar 2010 (10)

Are there no limits to Sam's abilities?

We start with Della in the nest box messing about as usual.

Suddenly Sam comes to the entrance hole - and Della greets him by fluttering her wings and saying a few sweet words.

I expect she is hoping for a morsel of food!

In comes Sam.

But what is he carrying?  It doesn't look much like food to me.

It's more nesting material!  Still, Sam dutifully gives it to Della ...

... and she graciously accepts it!

Sam turns to go ...

.. leaving Della alone in the nest box - and still as hungry as she was originally!

Is this common behaviour by a male bluetit?  We have never seen it before.  Sam must be something special.  I hope his genes get passed on successfully!

Della seems quite unfazed by all this unusual behaviour anyway!  She does another nesting wriggle to celebrate.
