Bluetit Diary    Dec 2010 (1)

Thursday 2nd December 2010

Although Box1 and Box2 were reinstalled in early November, there were problems with Box3.  When I built it in early 2007 I made it out of exterior quality plywood.  Because I did not use any paint, varnish or preservative, the boxes panels have started to warp and so I have decided to rebuild it.  This time I have use half inch marine plywood and have sealed the edges with varnish.  I hope this version will last longer than the last!

While I was rebuilding Box3, I decided to make a few minor alterations that hopefully will improve the picture quality and the angle from which the photographs are taken.  I have raised the bottom of the nesting area by about an inch and have moved the entrance hole away from the far wall towards the camera.  I hope this will encourage any nesting bird to build her nest in the far left hand corner of the nesting area, this being the furthest place that she can get from the entrance hole.  Lastly, I have connected the microphone lead from the top camera to a phono socket on the base of the box so that I can link it up for sound later without having to go inside the box.

One more thing of interest happened in Mayford in early December -  it snowed!

Where's our fat block gone?

Robbie can't find his bird seed either!

Saturday 11th December

Saturday 11th, the first visitor entered Box1.   First a bluetit landed on the entrance.  This had happened several times before, but this time was special.

He went inside!

Nice place this!

I hope the chicks can't fall through this hole?

He was inside the box for about 6 minutes so he must be serious about it.

Tuesday 13th December

So far, no bird has gone into Box3.  This is about to change.

At last - a bird enters Box3.

Monday 20th December

The thaw has started and Box3 now has a curtain of icicles hanging from the front edge of its roof.  However, a bluetit manages to navigate its way to the entrance hole without crashing into them!

Another tricky landing coming up?

This time a departure.

Directly the weather improves, the birds suddenly become more interested in the nest boxes again.  Here a great tit is looking at Box1.

This time a bluetit.
