Bluetit Diary    Mar 2011 (4)

Thursday 10th March, 2011

For the first time this year, nesting material has been brought into Box2.

Before showing you the progress in Box2, the Fat Feeder camera caught this chaffinch image today.  Rather fine we thought!

The weather has been bright and sunny for the last few days.  Today, though dry, is not quite as good but the female in residence in Box2 must have caught the nest building bug as at around half past twelve, she came in with some nesting material.

This was the first time this year and reminds us that we have not given names to the Box2 birds yet.

Having come into the nest box, she paused for a few seconds while she considered what to do.

She moved towards the hole and looked out, still holding on to her precious nesting material.

Suddenly, she placed it on the floor of the box.  Some birds make great efforts to hurl their nesting material all around the place, but not this bird - at least not this time!

It was over two and a quarter hours later that she came back with another load.

Again, she paused after she had arrived inside the box, looking as though she was wondering where to put it.

After she had again placed it on the floor, she had a little nest wriggle to celebrate.

When she had finished that, she stopped and looked towards the exit ...

... and left.

Finally, an hour and a half later, a male bluetit - presumably her partner - came to inspect progress.  I hope he was happy with what he saw.

Incidentally, if you compare the head feather on this bird with those of the female a couple of picture up, you will see the difference in head plumage that is typical between the male and the female at this time of year.
