Bluetit Diary    Mar 2011 (5)

Sunday 13th March, 2011

Another fight!  This time in Box1.

We have had several of the normal male/female swaps in Box1 today - presumably between Joe and Amy.  This one appears to start like all the rest.

But this one is a bit different, ...

... as another bluetit seems to want to muscle in on the act.

Chaos ensues!

One of the interesting things about this is that one of the pair already in the box appears to stand above the fray ...

... and that bird appears ...

... to be ...

... the male!

I sometimes wonder whether the male bluetit does anything except impregnate the female!  Perhaps that's a bit hard.  He does feed the female - sometimes - if she is lucky - when she is incubating; and he does help the female feed the chicks, particularly in the early days when the female is trying to keep them warm at the same time.

Most of the fights that we have observed seem to be between two females or a male versus a female!

In fact, so disgusted is he with this behaviour of the female that he ...

... heads for the exit as soon as possible!
