Bluetit Diary    Mar 2012 (1)

Tuesday 6th March 2012

We've had another fight, this time in Box2.

Shortly before 11 o'clock, a bluetit landed on the entrance to Box2.

He spent a lot of time looking around and inside the box and finally, more than a minute after landing on the box's entrance, he went inside.

I've referred to this bird as a male, and from this shot of the top of his head, I think this is correct.

I think it is more likely too, as it is the male's role to seek out possible nesting sites.

He spent some time examining the inside of the box and here he is having a look outside.

His visit appears to have caused some consternation to another bluetit - here it comes to investigate what is going on.

The first bird then appeared to leave the box ...

... but in fact turned round and landed again on the entrance.

After humming and hawing for a while, he went into the box again.

Yes, this looks like the same bird.

This picture, which was taken less than a second after the one above, is somewhat difficult to interpret!

My feeling is that while the bluetit inside was looking around, another bluetit approached the entrance hole, only to be knocked off its perch by a third bluetit charging into the box at high speed.  You can see its tail disappearing into the box ...

... where it hesitated - you can still see its tail sticking out of the box.

This shows the same position from the inside camera.

Let battle commence!
