Bluetit Diary    May 2012 (22)

Monday 28th May 2012

The chicks in Box1 hatched out on 10th May so today is day 18 - the earliest after hatching we have ever had chicks fledging.

I know it's early but these chicks aren't exactly raring to go, are they?

Perhaps they are still half asleep.

They appears to be reasonably well equipped with feathers though ...

... and they are, as ever, eager to be fed!

Another feed.  One would have thought that being a group of only three chicks, they would have been well fed and so would be ready to fledge earlier than other less fortunate groups ...

... but this looks rather the opposite - a full stomach leads to lethargy perhaps?

Another good wing stretch ...

... and then a good flap.  Perhaps after all ... ?

Is this chick thinking about going?

If it was, it clearly decided not to go yet.  It is now the end of the day and all three chicks are still in the nest box.  This one is practising hard though.  Tomorrow ... ?
