Bluetit Diary    May 2012 (21)

Tuesday 22nd May 2012 (cont)

The last chick is all by itself for the very first time.  It snuggles up to the corner for comfort  (This is a common behaviour of the last chick!)

Mum comes in but seems more interested in keeping her box clean than comforting her chick.

So the chick goes back to its corner.

Again, Mum comes back to the nest box and this time she has brought some food for the chick.

But she soon leaves and the chick is by itself again.

Suddenly it seems to decide that it has to leave the box too.

It flies up to the hole ...

... look out for a short while ...

... and drops like a stone!

You can just see a rapidly dropping blur of the chick directly beneath the exit hole.

It even left the almost obligatory dropping!

Ten minutes later Mum is back to see if there are any more chicks to look after in the nest box.  Of course she just has to clean out the last dropping before she goes!

This is the last time any of the family enters the nest box - until perhaps next year!
