First thing there was no sign that this would be any different from any of the other days of the chicks' brief lives so far.
Mum came in with food as usual.
At long last, at about half past eight, a chick jumped and flapped up to the exit hole ...
... and looked out!
But no - the prospect was just too frightening at this stage.
Ten minutes later it is back for another look ...
... and nearly ten minutes later it is back again. Each time it gets that little bit further out of the nest box before it all becomes too much.
This time it looks serious.
"I'm right behind you. Go for it!"
