Bluetit Diary    May 2012 (25)

Wednesday 30th May 2012 (cont)

Now the first chick has gone, the second chick goes to the hole to look outside ...

... and chick number three gives its wings some exercise.

"Is he leaving me too?" it seems to be saying.

Yes!  Chick number two is on its way!

So the last chick is by itself in the nest box.

"Will these things really work?"

When in doubt, preen! (With apologies to Paul Gallico.)

The parents still come to the nest box with food.  I think this is Dad with some grub in his beak.

Back to the nest cup for comfort.

Has this chick finally decided to go?

It's in the hole - and appears to be calling ...

... but no, not this time.

Less than a minute later it is back again ...

... and this time it looks serious.

Chick number three fledges!

Many chicks (most?) leave a poo just inside the nest box as they finally leave the nest box.  You can see the white blob beneath the nest box hole.

Half an hour has passed and Mum comes into the nest box with a mealworm.

A bit later she is back to remove the last chick's dropping.  There is no point at all in doing this but the instinct to keep the box clean must be so strong and automatic that she has no option.

A couple of hours have now passed since the last chick flew and this appears to be the last visit either parent made to the box.

So it's all over for another year!  Only nine chicks fledged this year, so it has not been as successful as last year.  However, at least both nests that were completed produced live chicks, which is more than can be said for many other tit boxes.  For many people, 2012 has been as bad as 2007 was for us.
